What? Title and brief description of event. Coal Pits and Stone Quarries at Ringinglow A walk of about 2.5 miles looking for evidence of 19th Century coal mining and stone quarrying on the moorland fringe of Sheffield. There will also be opportunities to see how geologists map the underlying rock sequences, and for the influence of geology on the landscape to be discussed.

When? Friday 26th May 2006 - 6.00 pm to 8.00 pm

Where? Meet at the rough car park on the north side of Fulwood Lane near the head of Porter Clough (Grid Ref SK285840). If approaching from Sheffield, take the A625 Ecclesall Road South for about 3 miles from the city centre and turn up Ringinglow Road just before Ecclesall Parish Church. Follow this until the hamlet of Ringinglow (about 2.5 miles) and turn right just past the Round House (former toll house) onto Fulwood Lane.

Is the event suitable for all? No, sorry. There are 5 stiles en route and a rough muddy footpath to negotiate. Who is it not suitable for? Disabled in the lower limbs. There is some uphill work, but it is relatively gentle and people with blood pressure can take their time!
