East Yorkshire RIGS Group

case for the conservation of Little Weighton Railway Cutting

prepared by Dr F Whitham.

There was going to be a public inquiry into a planning application for this site in May 2001, but the appeal was withdrawn after opposition from local residents. The owners already have permission to fill the site with inert waste, leaving a 5 metre high face on one side of the cutting for part of its length. They had applied for permission to alter that plan. At present the owners would like to sell the site before it is completely filled so the cutting could be turned into a footpath, picnic site, nature trail, or some other public amenity. The East Yorkshire RIGS Group would support plans that conserve the chalk exposure and allow access for reserachers and educational purposes.
