Thursday 22nd January - (lecture) "The rising waters" by Prof. Lynne Frostick of Hull University and President of the Geological Society (of London) about climate change and flooding. Click here for the abstract .

Thursday 19th March - Annual General Meeting and evening lecture by Will Watts of the Rorunda Museum Trust - 'Rotunda, the William Smith Museum of Geology, its history and redevelopment'.

Saturday 25th April - Rock, Mineral and Fossil Roadshow at the Treasure House in Beverley. Free admission; you can bring specimens in for identification by the "experts" (sorry no valuations). Open to the public from 11 am to 3 pm. Displays by members of the Kingston Lapidary Society and Hull Geological Society.
Sunday 26th April - Rifle Butts Spring Clean and social event. Booking appreciated.
Sunday 3rd May - Threshfield (public field meeting) led by Ian and Mary Heppenstall. Part of Yorkshire Geology Month. Meet in front of the University of Hull on Cottingham Road at 8 am or Shirethorns Threshfield Quarry NGR SD980635 at 10 am for a 10-30 departure. Wear warm clothing and walking boots, do not wear shorts. The walk lasts 5 1/2 hours. Moderately strenuous, some steep slopes and stiles and slippery in places. The parish of Threshfield has within its boundary a number of mineral resources. Starting with a quarry once worked for Magnesian Limestone we proceed along the line of the North Craven Fault to a calcium carbonate quarry with a draw kiln nearby and then to some old lead workings. Some stone buildings are passed en route. We then cross Threshfield Moor where peat and sandstone were once worked, finally looking at some old coal workings before returning to the start point.
Friday 15th May - Microscopy Evening (members only)
Saturday 30th May 2009 - "Fossil Fossick at Hornsea" (public field meeting) led by Stuart Jones. Part of Yorkshire Geology Month. The aim of the trip is to look at the variety of rocks and fossils brought by the Ice Age. Meet at 2 pm at the car park at the south end of South Marine Drive. Booking is appreciated but not required. Bring suitable outdoor clothing and footwear for the prevailing weather conditions. Keep away from the cliffs unless you are wearing a hard hat. Safety spectacles must be worn if you bring a hammer. There are some steep steps down to the pebbly beach. Families are welcome; young geologists must be accompanied by an adult.

Saturday 29th August - Roadshow at Hornsea Museum. Organised by Stuart Jones. Open to the public from 11 am until 3 pm. There will be displays of rocks and fossils by members of the Hull Geological Society. We will try to identify any finds brought along and give advice on collecting and curating. Sorry, no valuations. Disabled access is very good and families are most welcome. Admission to the Roadshow is free, but there may be a charge for visiting the Museum.

Saturday 24th October - Joint meeting with the Yorkshire Geological Society and the Geography Department of Hull University on "The Last Glacial Maximum", organised by Mike Rogerson and Paul Hildreth. Speakers are: Dick Mol (Natural History Museum Rotterdam), Ian Heppenstall (Hull Geological Society) Jane Bunting (University of Hull) and David Bridgland (University of Durham). Display of bones and fossils from the Kelsey Hill and Keyingham Gravel Pits by Stephen Whittaker. Click here for the abstracts . Refreshments provided.

Winter lecture meetings start at 7-30 p.m. and are held in the Department of Geography, University of Hull (unless otherwise stated). Non-members are welcome to attend but please arrive before the start of the meeting. If you arrive late the building may be locked for security reasons and you will not be able to get in, particularly if we are using the first floor lecture theatres. If we are in the ground floor lecture theatre you can knock on the window and we will let you in.
The Microscopy Evenings are for members only, sorry! Members should contact the Secretary for further details.

The Hull Geological Society is affiliated to the The Geologists' Association and the The Yorkshire Geological Society . Members are invited to attend the meetings of those societies.
