The Society was founded in 1888 and is now an educational charity No. 229147.
Like many similar societies, the Hull Geological Society offers its members a variety of indoor meetings in the winter, with guest lecturers speaking on many aspects of geology. There are also Members Evenings, where amateurs are able to give short talks, slide shows or exhibitions of their own geological interests.
In the summer there is a series of field meetings, which concentrate on the local area of East Yorkshire, the north Yorkshire coast and North Lincolnshire. We usually have one trip by minibus to study the geology of another area. In recent years the Society has made contact with similar geological Societies in other parts of the country and has hosted field meetings for them, when local 'experts' lead the visiting party to quarries and the coast, as an introduction to the area.
The Society also publishes an occasional journal called Humberside Geologist, which encourages amateurs to write about their interests, and concentrates on the geology of the area and the history of local geological studies. The current issue is free for members; back numbers may be purchased from the Secretary.
Membership is open to anyone with an interest in rocks, minerals and fossils; no qualifications are required. Though some previous experience does help with some of the lecture meetings and we occasionally cannot allow children on quarry visits for safety reasons. The current annual subscriptions are 8 pounds, 10 pounds for families and institutions, 6 pounds for retired people and 3 pounds for students/unwaged (or 7-50 for three years in advance). Donations are always welcome.
Overseas members must pay their subscriptions in Sterling or Euros. Overseas subscriptions do not include the cost of postage. If you wish to receive mailings by post as well as e-mail please enquire about costs. New overseas members should send their first year's subscription with the membership application form.
