Exploring Geology around Hull

Have you ever wondered what Hull is built on? Did Dinosaurs live in Yorkshire in Jurassic times? Have you ever found rocks or fossils on a local beach and wondered what they are? What was the area like during the Ice Age? What processes shaped the landscape of East Yorkshire? This is your chance to find out!
The course will include:-
Instruction on fieldwork techniques and safety.
Introduction to the sedimentary rock types found in the area.
Introduction to the main fossil groups found in the area.
Introduction to the geological history of the region.
The Ice Age.
The uses of local rock.
Building stones of Hull.
Ideas for further study

No previous experience necessary. The course will include fieldwork - to study and collect rocks and fossils. The details of the fieldwork will be discussed and arranged with the class, and may depend on suitables tides and permissions to visit sites. The fieldwork will not be strenuous, but students will have to wear suitable clothing. The tutor will advise what should be worn. Hard hats should be available for students to borrow. Students will be asked to share transport and follow the tutor's safety instructions.
Students will be asked to keep a record of their observations for assessment. The dates of the fieldwork will depend on the tide and are yet to be arranged.

Starts Wednesday 18th April 2007:- four Wednesday evenings from 7-30pm until 9-30pm at the University of Hull, Department of Geography and three half day field trips at weekends. [course number U???PS]
